This project is coming soon to North Park, one of San Diego’s trendiest neighborhoods. It will contain a spectacular landscaped courtyard elevated above the street and visible through an iconic three-story portal. Aptly named The Greenhouse, the project designed by Stephen Dalton Architects will be a mixed-use building consisting of a combination of residential apartments and short-term rental units.
Developed by Urban Housing Partners, the project embraces California’s climate by providing full-width balconies along the street façade and exterior hallways for circulation. It enjoys views in all directions of the surrounding neighborhood, which is currently transitioning from low-rise buildings to a more dense urban environment. The top floor amenity deck will have sight lines all the way to downtown San Diego.
From the street, The Greenhouse’s façade is dominated by a green-toned gradient that progressively lightens as it makes its way up the building. This horizontally banded gradient is coupled with an alternating pattern of vertical metal screens. At each story, the screen pattern shifts to break down visual distinction of individual units and create a unified mass along the building’s frontage. The design is further punctured by multi-story, rectangular wood-sided openings framing the entryway and courtyard. Motifs of the green gradient and scattered vertical elements manifest themselves throughout the design where they can be seen in both the beautifully screened courtyard and the playfully colored stair tower.
