Our clients asked for a comfortable, modern house that utilizes durable materials in unconventional ways. The site is a tight, pie-shaped lot with peek views of the ocean and privacy concerns from uphill neighbors. The house is an open floor plan organized into two zones, one with private garden views to the rear and the other angled to capture ocean views down the street. The family space near the street is elevated to maximize views and maintain privacy. Changes in floor and ceiling height define spaces within the open plan and sliding wood panels allow the space to be further modulated. Exterior materials such as stucco and fiber cement panels are used throughout the interior spaces. A large, tilt-up, glass door opens the living room completely to the rear yard. When open its frame acts as a trellis spanning indoors and out.
