21st Street Pump Station

This project goes beyond its utilitarian program by introducing public amenities and a civic presence in a community lacking in examples of good civic architecture. The materials palette is derived from community buildings and strengthens the buildings ties to the community at large. Translucent clerestories allow shadows of the steel frame within to ghost through and allude to Del Mar’s pseudo-Tudor heritage while also providing natural light to the interior. The sloping roof is warped to diminish the building height along the pedestrian path and maximize the available roof area and orientation for photovoltaic cells.
