JACARANDA ON 9TH, Cortez Hill’s newest affordable housing community, was named Project of the Year – New Construction (Under 90 Units), at this year’s San Diego Housing Federation Ruby Awards ceremony. Jacaranda on 9th, located in Downton San Diego, is five stories, with one and two-bedroom units, and features 88 high quality apartments built on a compact 0.4-acre site. The Ruby Awards helps to recognize projects and people that come together to create affordable housing solutions in San Diego.  

Jacaranda on 9th supports veterans, seniors, and families working on new chapters of their lives in Cortez Hill. Spearheaded by Community HousingWorks, this project was a team effort. Highland Construction, PLSA, Schmidt Design Group, and Stephen Dalton Architects put their heads together to create the perfect solution for this development.  

In this bustling downtown area, Jacaranda on 9th is a piece of tranquility and respite from the busy world. Framed by blooming Jacaranda trees, the building creates an intimate corner in the neighborhood of Cortez Hill and fits seamlessly into the surrounding area. Even on a compact site, the building has open-ended corridors and open stairways, which grants access to the outdoors and courtyard which helps support density. The building’s south-facing courtyard was designed to be a welcoming space, with a play area for children which gets lots of sunlight. There are several amenity spaces for residents to enjoy, including a community room with access to the courtyard, a computer lab, leasing office, laundry facilities, meeting room, bike storage room, and barbeques. 

Jacaranda on 9th creates visual intrigue, with angles and teal color blocking on the façade of the building that fits into the urban area it calls home. In a cozy corner of Cortez Hill, Jacaranda on 9th is a beautiful and serene spot for many to call home.
