This sun-filled, family home sits on a downward sloping site with panoramic ocean views. Technically a “remodel”, the existing house suffered from excessive circulation, an underutilized living room, dark interiors, and a remote garage rendered inaccessible by a steep driveway. SDA’s design solution was to create a split level entry at the center of the house. The new entry reduces circulation, is a dynamic transition from outside to inside, and provides visual connections between floors. Beyond the entry, the new great room is the family’s gathering space. The great room extends into an adjacent deck by way of a 24’ wide sliding door system that disappears into the walls. A louvered shade structure moderates sun light and provides a “ceiling” to the deck. Finally, relocating the garage to the second floor (street level), increased its usefulness and efficiency.
